Ever since she was a child Anna had loved ice cream. There was just something about the smooth, creamy texture that made her taste buds dance. It sounded silly, but no matter what was wrong ice cream could always make her feel better, no matter how brief the moment was.
Ice cream was comforting. It reminded her of a simpler time when scraped knees, hurtful words, and broken hearts were the worst things in the world to her. The first time she fell in the yard scrapping her knee to the point of bleeding Anna had cried for her mother.
Amy, had bandaged her up and placed a bowl of ice cream in front of her and though a few sniffles were left, the tears were gone and magically, everything was okay again. The first time she’d been teased to the point of crying by a friend her mother had sat her down and explained that not everyone in the world was nice.
Sometimes in order to make themselves feel better about who they were, people harmed other people with their words, but it’s only because deep down inside they were probably hurting too. Amy placed a bowl of ice cream in front of her speaking words that to this day Anna still lived by.
‘Some people lash out at the world around them Anna when they feel hurt or betrayed and that’s when you need to be there for them the most. Show them that you will be there through thick and thin. Sometimes all a person needs is a little faith in the people around them’
The first time a boyfriend broke her heart she came home in tears. She yelled at her mother when she tried to find out what was wrong, screaming and throwing disrespectful words like daggers before slamming the door to her bedroom and crumbling on her bed.
It didn’t take long for Amy to appear with a bowl of ice cream and two spoons. Apologies were made and she spent the next three hours talking with her mother and eating ice cream and the ache in her heart lessened.
She sighed as she leaned against the headboard of the bed, rain pouring outside as a war raged around them. It was the simple things that people including herself Angel or not, took for granted because it was readily available and now, in the midst of the battle to end the apocalypse there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t give for the comfort of a bowl of ice cream.
The fluttering of wings let her know Castiel was back from his patrol of the perimeter with Dean.
“How was patrol?”
“It went well. The perimeter is secure for the time being.”
She nodded and he took off his trench coat one arm at a time.
“Dean?”
“With Joanna.”
“Sam?”
“On watch.”
She nodded and glanced up finally noticing the brown bag in his hands. She raised an eyebrow and motioned to the bag.
“Whatcha got there?”
He toed off his boots and sat gently on the bed beside her. He paused before speaking.
“Lately you have seemed…upset. I am unsure of why, but I thought this might help.”
He held the bag out for her and she made a face before taking it and looking into it. Tears pooled in her eyes as she gazed down on the small tub of ice cream. She glanced up at him and concern flitted across his face as he spoke, voice soft.
“I did not mean to upset you Anna. During our patrol tonight I spoke with Dean about my concerns for you and he told me whenever Joanna was looking upset he would bring her a slice of warm apple pie. Apparently it was something her mother used to do.”
Anna nodded and swiped at her eyes before the tear fell as Castiel continued.
“And I remembered that night after you first came back, you told me of your human life on earth and if I recalled correctly, which I assure you I do, it was the magic of ice cream that made you feel better.”
She met his eyes and she could see the nervousness inside them. She placed a palm against his cheek and he leaned into it. Her voice was barely a whisper.
“You remember that?”
He gave her a warm smile.
“I remember everything you say Anna.”
She leaned in kissing him, pouring her love and gratitude into every caress of her tongue, every touch of her lips. She wasn’t sure how she’d got so lucky, how she and Castiel managed to overcome all they had gone through, but she knew in her soul that he was the one she was always meant to be with.
“Thanks Cas.”
“You are welcome.”
He wrapped an arm around her tugging her closer as she pulled out the tub and handed him one of the plastic spoons before yanking the lid off with a gleeful smile. He watched her body relax for the first time in weeks as she dug out a spoon full placing it in her mouth eyes closing with a groan.
In that moment he decided that no matter what it took, fighting demons, killing hell hounds, or facing the devil himself he would bring Anna home this magic ice cream at least once a week. It was worth it to see her smile.
