When Luck Runs Out (7/11)

Chapter 7

San Francisco, California
Kurt’s Apartment
(13 Weeks)

After leaving the strip club Dean and Jo followed Kurt back to his apartment. Now they were sitting in the Impala and Dean was watching as Jo unwrapped a candy and licked her lips. He smirked as she bit into it and groaned.

“Oh god I love chocolate.”

Dean reached over and attempted the snatch a piece of her chocolate, but she slapped his hand away. He pouted and she raised an eyebrow.

“I know you did not just try to steal my chocolate.”

“I want a piece.”

She snorted.

“Go buy your own.”

He glared at her.

“I did…you’re eating it.”

She shrugged as she bit another piece off.

“Oh well…sucks to be you.”

Dean opened his mouth and was about to say something when the light in Kurt’s apartment flicked on. Dean cocked his gun, Jo put down the chocolate and did the same. She followed Dean’s lead as he got out of the car. As they were rounding the corner they heard glass shattering.

When Jo glanced up the lights were off. They took off at a run and made it up the stairs to Kurt’s apartment in what felt like seconds. They burst into the apartment guns raised and Dean frowned.

“What the…?”

Dean’s voice trailed off and Jo came around to his other side. His face held confusion as he watched the werewolf, who looked mostly human, leaned over Kurt’s mauled body. At Jo’s startled gasp Dean looked over at her and so did the werewolf. Dean lost his focus for one second, but that’s all it took.

The werewolf jumped across the room and the weight of its body hit into Jo knocking her down. Jo’s gun slid across the room and as she reached for it the werewolf used its nails to claw at her body. Dean hollered and right as its mouth was about to clamp onto Jo’s throat, he sliced it with a silver blade.

The werewolf reared its head back, growled, and jumped off of Jo. That’s when he saw its face. She let out another growl before running to the balcony and jumping off into the night. Dean was breathing heavy as he ran over to Jo.

She was on the ground covered in blood. He shook her, but her eyes didn’t open. His hands shook as he lifted her, carried her down the stairs, and placed her gently into the passenger side of the Impala. He started the car and sped down the road.

He glanced at Jo and his jaw tensed as he whispered to her, while moving a piece of hair from her forehead.

“Hold on Jo…it’s gonna be okay…”

He got his cell phone out, called information, and asked for the address of the nearest hospital. Ten minutes later he was there and doctors, nurses and orderlies were already taking over. Dean watched as they loaded Jo on a stretcher and wheeled her through the double doors he couldn’t enter.

He watched until he couldn’t see her anymore. His breathing was labored as his blood covered body slipped slowly down the wall. He stared at his hands as he tried to calm his breathing. His head fell into his hands as he tried to keep his emotions in check. One second…it was only one second…he’d never forgive himself if Jo and the baby weren’t okay…

*************

A few hours later as the sun was coming up Dean rubbed a hand over his face as he paced the waiting room floor and pulled out his cell phone. He dialed Sam’s number and waited. When Sam picked up he could hear the worry in his brother’s voice.

“Dean, you okay?”

Dean’s voice came out hoarse from not having spoken in a few hours.

“No, Sammy…I’m not okay the werewolf got Jo…she…I’m at the hospital.”

Dean swallowed hard at the panic in Sam’s voice.

“Oh my god! What happened? Is she okay? Do you…”

“Sam..stop…Shut up!”

Dean pinched the bridge of his nose and Sam’s voice halted. He heard Dean’s quiet voice come over the line.

“Sam, it’s Madison.”

A look of shock crossed Sam’s face.

“What?”

There was anger in Dean’s voice as he spoke.

“Yeah, awesome job of keeping an eye on her.”

Sam walked down the small hall and opened the door to Madison’s bedroom. He glanced at her and she was sound asleep. He frowned.

“Dean, I’ve been here the whole time. She’s in bed, asleep.”

“Well, she wasn’t a few hours ago. Check her right arm below her elbow. I nicked her with a silver knife.”

“Dean…”

“Just do it Sam…I gotta go the doctor’s here.”

The phone went dead and Sam head a light moan from the bed as Madison rolled over and blinked her eyes open. She smiled when she noticed Sam standing there with a pained look on his face.

“Morning.”

She sat up and noticed right away that she was naked. She frowned and held the sheets tighter against her body. When she moved Sam caught a glimpse of her arm. And there was the wound, right where Dean said it would be. A jolt of pain shot through Sam’s body. No…

“Um…where are my pajamas?”

Sam could feel a mixture of pain and anger boil up inside of him. He walked quickly out of her bedroom and headed for the front door. Madison jumped out of bed her heart berating frantically. She was beyond confused. She called out from her bedroom as she followed Sam.

“Sam? What’s going on? Where are you going?”

She stood in the hallway wrapped in the sheet as she watched him lock the door before he turned around to face her. His voice was hard and she couldn’t read his eyes.

“I’m not going anywhere. And neither are you.”

Panic filled her as she stood there…Sam watched her eyes widen in fear and it bothered him. If she was a werewolf why would she be afraid of him? Why would she look so innocent? He shook those thoughts away. Jo was lying in a hospital bed because of Madison…he had to focus. If only it was that easy, Sam thought.
