Dean glanced at Bobby’s back door as he walked down the stairs and into the backyard, a slice of pie in hand. He tuned out the noise coming from inside the house and moved toward the impala. It had been a rough few weeks, with the trip to the past, his confrontation with Michael, famine, and Sam’s detox.
It was about time they had a little time to themselves to recuperate and figure out their next move. Dean put his plate on the roof before leaning inside the car and starting her up. He grinned as the engine purred to life.
He dug around the side of the car, pulled out a cassette tape, and pushed it into the player. When Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ wafted through the speakers he shut the door, grabbed his pie and leaned against the front of the car.
Dean took a deep breath, fresh air filling his lungs before shoveling a bite of pie into his mouth. He groaned, eyes sliding shut as the tension ebbed away from his body. It was moments like these as few and far in between as they were, that relaxed him.
Everyone needed a break from reality once in a while. Sitting there, sun beating down on his face while he devoured his pie, honestly he couldn’t think of anything he’d rather be doing at the moment.
Dean was a simple guy, it didn’t take much to bring a smile to his face, but lately with everything going on, smiles were becoming rarer, and relaxation practically nonexistent.
With the gentle breeze blowing, classic rock in the background, and warm metal under his skin he could almost pretend that they weren’t in the middle of a war; that he and Sammy were just passing through, visiting Bobby after a hunt.
If only things could be that simple again, but Dean had a feeling they never would. As he was lifting the last piece of pie to his lips he heard the screen door slam open, Sam’s voice dissipating the peaceful bubble he’d created.
“Dean, what are you doing? We’ve been looking for you.”
He sighed and finished chewing before turning in his brother’s direction.
“I’ll be right there.”
Sam nodded before moving back inside. Dean took one more look around the junk yard before pushing himself off his car, shutting it off, and heading back inside…back to a reality.
