Sam glanced around confused. Where the hell was he? The last thing he remembered was standing in the garden with Dean talking to Joshua and then...nothing. He glanced around at the empty parking lot surrounding him and spotted the impala a few feet away.

He walked over to it and frowned. He turned in the direction of the door it was parked in front of and as he was turning around to pull open the car door he heard a deep chuckle from inside the room.

Sam walked over slowly, testing the knob and pushing the door open. He walked in the room and froze at the sight in front of him. His brother lay bare chested in a tangle of sheets, Jo Harvelle sitting up next to him.

She was clad in Dean’s shirt, blonde curls mused flowing past her shoulders, a look of deep concentration on her face as she leaned over his brother. Sam glanced at Dean’s face and the expression there surprised him. His arms were behind his head, grin gracing his lips as he watched Jo.

His body was completely relaxed. He was calm, happy even. Another chuckle broke the silence in the room and Jo grunted reaching out and slapping Dean lightly.

“Cut it out! Look what you did. You made me mess up.”

His body shook with laughter as he rolled his eyes humor in his voice.

“Oh forgive me princess. I didn’t mean to ruin your artwork. You do realize I’m a human being not a blank canvas right?”

“Shhh. You’re not forgiven now hold still I’m almost done.”

Sam watched as his brother glared at her while she went back to her drawing. He could tell Dean wasn’t annoyed in the slightest. He almost seemed to enjoy in the attention. Less than three minutes later he heard the pop of the pen cap.

He watched the petite blonde smirk at his brother a mischievous glint in her eyes. Dean raised an eyebrow before glancing down at his chest. His mouth fell open, head jerking up to meet Jo’s.

“Tell me you did not write ‘Jo Harvelle was here’ on my chest.”

She giggled.

“Okay I did not write ‘Jo Harvelle was here’ on your chest.”

“You little…”

He didn’t finish the sentence just tackled her to the bed as she squealed. Sam couldn’t believe his eyes as Dean wrestled Jo playfully down on the bed before gripping her face gently and kissing her. He pulled back placing a few kisses on her neck and collar bone.

She groaned and ran her fingers through his hair. Sam felt like he was violating his brother’s privacy that this was something special and sacred to him, but he couldn’t stop watching them. He’d never seen Dean so comfortable with someone before.

It was like she made him high. The laughing, the smiles. Dean never smiled that much at least not without sarcasm or leering in the mix. How had he not known about this? Dean mated their foreheads and spoke softly.

“How long until you’ve gotta meet back up with your mom?”

Jo sighed.

“A day or so.”

“Where does she think you are?”

“What makes you think I lied?”

He made a face and she laughed.

“Exorcising a ghost in Texas. And your pet Angel? Where does he think you are?”

Dean snorted.

“I don’t need to tell Cas where I am, he’s not my babysitter.”

The phone on the nightstand rang and they glanced at each other before bursting out into laughter. Dean shook his head and grabbed his phone before putting a finger to his lips. He flipped it open and moved off of Jo.

“What now Cas?”

Sam watched his brother’s face pale slightly and he frowned.

“Oh hi Ellen. No you’re not interrupting anything. What’s up?”

Jo sat up pushing her hair behind her ears as she motioned for Dean to let her hear what was going on. He waved her off and continued talking to Ellen.

“She what? When? No I didn’t know. She’s not answering her phone? Where is she? Okay…yeah sure. No problem. Will do…yup…okay bye.”

He flipped the phone shut and glared at Jo.

“Where’s your phone?”

She gave him a sheepish look.

“I probably left it in the truck…opps.”

“Mmm.”

Sam watched as Dean laid back down pulling Jo against him. The room was silent and Sam was about to turn around and try to find his way out of the memory he was in when Jo’s soft voice stopped him in his tracks.

“Do you miss him?”

Sam whirled around, studying his brother’s face closely as Dean hesitated.

“Of course…but I think maybe right now it’s better this way. When this shit with the devil and the apocalypse is all over…we’ll get things back on track. He’s my brother…I love him…it just wasn’t working the way it was anymore.”

That’s when he realized it. This must have happened when he and Dean split up. Right after they helped Ellen, Rufus and Jo on that job. Why didn’t Dean ever say anything? Sam frowned and watched Jo nod against his brother’s chest before letting out a long sigh and shifting to sit up.

“I should go.”

His hand caught her tightening slightly.

“Don’t. Just…stay another day. I told your mom I’d swing by Texas see if you were okay. We have a little time. We can go back to normal tomorrow right now…just stay.”

She ran a hand over his chest, before giving in and lying back against him. Her voice was calm, but filled with force when she spoke.

“Okay…one more day, but we can’t keep this up Dean. We can’t just live in this little bubble…you know that.”

“I know. Things’ll be different when we gank the devil…hell I might even take you out on a real date.”

Dean smirked and Jo chuckled as he kissed the top of her head. Sam couldn’t believe his eyes. This whole time he couldn’t understand why Dean was so broken. Why he seemed to practically give up after Carthage.

He’d always thought it was because Dean had feelings for Jo and never got the chance to tell her, show her, but it was the exact opposite. It was the love he lost, the love they’d finally recognized that was torn from him. That’s what finally did the impossible and broke the great Dean Winchester.

He’d seen his brother with countless females, but it was never like this moment right here. It was almost like Dean was searching for time before it left without him. An irate voice broke through Sam’s reflective moment and his body stiffened.

“What the hell are you doing here?”

Sam spun around and was met with his brother’s angry face.

“Dean?”

“What the Hell are you doing here Sam?”

He floundered slightly, opening and closing his mouth a few times before he spoke.

“I just…I mean…I just happened. I don’t know. One minute we were talking to Joshua and then I was here.”

Dean’s glare could melt metal. Sam watched his brother’s eyes flicker to the scene unfolding before them and he saw a flash of pain, heartbreak cross Dean’s face before it was covered with a neutral expression. He walked past Sam and stood in front of the bed, moans sounding behind him as Sam swallowed hard.

“You don’t get to be here. Get out. I don’t know how you got in and I don’t care. You need to come back to the garden so Joshua can send us back.”

“Dean…”

He held up a hand stopping anything Sam was going to say.

“Don’t. This is none of your business. He’s waiting come on.”

Sam watched as Dean walked straight to the motel room door not even glancing at what was going on in the bed five feet from them. He followed his brother outside and he could see the tension in his body. The irritation on his face.

It was quiet as Dean leaned against the car, arms on the roof. They stood quietly for a few minutes. Sam took a deep breath before trying again.

“…I’m sorry…I didn’t realize. I didn’t know.”

When he looked at Sam there was genuine empathy on his brother’s face and for once Dean didn’t bother to hide the broken look on his face. Sam could see the devastation on his brother’s face and his heart broke for him.

At least he had years with Jessica before something happened. Not that it made her death okay, but he had dozens of memories to get him through the pain. Dean just had this one moment, a ray of light in the darkening cloud their lives had become.

“Well, now you do.”

He pulled open the car door, got in and Sam slowly walked over doing the same. He started it up, pulled out of the lot and followed the road like Cas had told them to. Heading back to the garden, back to Joshua and back to the world of the living yet again.
