No One Chooses This Life (5/5)

Chapter 5
Back on the Road Again…
(11-weeks)

Motel Near Highway 41

Dean pulled the Impala into the spot in front of their motel room and killed the engine. He rubbed a hand over his face, leaned back in his seat, and closed his eyes for a minute. It had been a long night. After they finally sent Greeley packing they had taken Molly to see David.

Jo explained to Molly, that in the accident fifteen years ago, she and Greeley were both killed and they’ve spent the last fifteen years haunting highway 41. It took a while for Molly to believe what Jo was telling her, but when she finally did she was able to move on.

Dean sighed and opened his eyes. He was exhausted. Once Molly had moved on they decided to find a motel for the night. After they checked in, Dean and Sam rock, paper, scissored to see who was gonna get dinner. Dean lost.

He grabbed the bag of food from the passenger seat, opened the car door, and got out. He made his way to their room, inserted the key, and pushed open the door. The TV was going softly and Sam walked out of the bathroom as Dean closed the door.

Sam looked at Dean, put a finger up to his lips, and motioned to Jo, who was sleeping on one of the beds. Dean quietly moved over to the table sat down and started going through the bag. Sam ran a hand through his wet hair and sat across from Dean.

“What’d you get?”

“Tacos, some burritos, a quesadilla or two…”

He shrugged

“You know…food.”

Sam nodded and grabbed a taco from the table. They sat in silence for a couple of minutes before Sam cleared his throat. Dean rolled his eyes and spoke with his mouth full.

“Say whatever you’re gonna say and do it quick.”

“Did you and Jo work things out?”

Dean shrugged and Sam sighed.

“Dean…you realize you can’t keep letting things go on like this. Sooner or later you guys are going to have to talk about why you’ve been fighting so much lately.”

Dean stopped eating his taco, looked up at Sam, and glared.

“Since when does my business with Jo have anything to do with you?”

Sam glared back at Dean.

“Since I’m the one that has to listen to the two of you constantly arguing. I don’t care what you do Dean, but you need to fix this. I hate being stuck between you two and all the fighting can’t be healthy for Jo.”

Sam grabbed another taco and stood up. Dean’s eyes followed him and he raised an eyebrow as Sam spoke.

“I’m gonna go for a walk. I wanna call Bobby and check in. I’ll be back in a little bit.”

Before Dean could say anything Sam was out the door. Dean sighed and crumpled up his empty wrapper before tossing it in the bag. He glanced over at Jo’s sleeping form and his eyes lingered on her stomach. She was just starting to show.

Nothing too noticeable, but Dean knew Jo’s body. Her stomach had a small bump, slightly rounded. Unnoticeable to anyone who didn’t know what she usually looked like. Her breasts were fuller, which Dean certainly didn’t complain about and her face had gotten a little fuller.

Dean watched her body move with each breath she took and he swallowed hard. She’s right he had been an ass lately. Every time she tried to talk to him, he snapped at her. He wasn’t sure why, he chalked it up to the fact that he had never had one female in his space for so long.

Dean didn’t know how to cohabitate with a female. It’s not something his life had ever allowed…until now. He stood up and walked over to the bed Jo was laying on. He bent down into a squat and looked at her. She was beautiful.

Dean glanced at her face to make sure she was still sleeping. He slowly reached out a hand and grazed his palm against her stomach. Since Dean had found out Jo was pregnant his emotions had been all over the place. He hadn’t actually given himself anytime to process the fact that soon he’d be a father.

He slid his hand to the hem of her shirt and then back up and under it. Her skin was warm against his palm and he could feel the small bulge of her stomach and all of a sudden everything was very real. He put his head down and tried to force down the emotions.

Jo’s eyes slid open and she frowned. She was trying to figure out what woken her up. It was then she felt the cool metal against her stomach. Her heart sped up and her eyes immediately looked down. A wave of relief went through her body when she saw Dean.

She lifted her hand and placed it over the hand on her stomach. His head shot up and she gave him a tight smile. Her voice was soft and clouded with sleep.

“What are you doing?”

He shrugged and went to pull his hand away, but she held it there.

“It’s okay Dean…it’s okay to be scared…or angry…or…happy.”

Jo shrugged and looked away from him. She moved her hand and Dean pulled his back. She was quiet and Dean wasn’t sure what to do. He stood up, kicked off his boots, and nudged Jo lightly with his hand.

“Move over.”

She did and he laid down next to her so they were facing each other. She raised an eyebrow at him when he didn’t say anything.

“What?”

“I’m sorry.”

A startled look crossed Jo’s face.

“You’re sorry?”

Dean nodded.

“I’ve been an ass these past few days.”

Jo watched him carefully for a few seconds before letting out a sigh.

“I’m sorry too. I was goading…”

Dean smirked and Jo rolled her eyes. Jo broke the silence a few minutes later.

“So…what brought this on?”

“What?”

“The apology?”

Dean gave a one armed shrug.

“I’m tired of fightin’ with you Jo.”

Her face softened and she nodded.

“Me too. You’ve been distant lately…I got no clue what’s goin on with you Dean…you’ve refused to talk to me for days.”

“I know…this is all new for me. I’m not used to having someone here all the time and soon…Jesus, soon our lives are gonna change forever. You’re havin’ a baby Jo…”

She chuckled softly.

“Oh thank god…you mean I’m not just getting fatter?”

He rolled his eyes.

“Yuck it up…I dunno…I guess it’s just hittin me now…that everything’s changing. Just…gimmie some time to put everything into perspective…okay?”

Jo nodded and moved closer to Dean as he lifted his arm so she could slide under it. When she was against him he wrapped the arm around her. Jo closed her eyes as Dean kissed her forehead.

“Get some rest.”

Jo nodded and not long later she was out cold. Dean sighed as he laid there with Jo in his arms. Things weren’t gonna be easy and he and Jo were going to have to work out there situation sooner or later, but for now…this was enough. They’d work everything else out another day…at least now they weren’t fighting anymore…and that was a start.
