Love. A four letter word Jo had always tried not to think too hard about because Dean wasn’t exactly the ‘I love you’ type. Or at least she hadn’t thought he was…not until recently. It sounded silly but Jo could pinpoint the minute it changed, the exact moment Dean had realized he’d fallen in love with her.
They had been on a hunt chasing down a Ruguru when its damn mate had attacked her in the woods and she’d fallen off the grid. She was fine, no harm no foul, but when she finally made her way back to the motel room covered in mud and leaves, Dean was a wreck.
When she pushed open the door broken lamps and chairs were scattered across the room and for a minute she was afraid that someone or something had found them. Jo caught sight of the brother’s and when Dean’s red-rimmed eyes met hers she felt her chest tighten.
Before she could say anything he’d had her in his arms, the wind knocked from her lungs as he hugged her, his grip edging on painful. She let out a small ‘oomph’, but wrapped her arms around his neck anyway.
When he pulled back large callused hands gripped her dirty cheeks and he captured her lips with his. Jo opened her mouth under his letting him deepen the kiss. The way his tongue caressed hers, mouth moving almost frantically over hers as if he was trying to poor everything he felt into that one moment.
By the time they pulled apart her hands were over his, heart hammering against her chest as she tried to catch her breath. A look of confusion had crossed her face as Dean pushed a mud slicked piece of hair behind her ear.
“Don’t ever do that again.”
She swallowed hard at the husky tone of his voice and almost asked him what she shouldn’t do again, but if the look on his face was anything to go by she’d say joking wouldn’t be smart at the moment.
“Sorry.”
Sam had excused himself and squeezed Jo’s shoulder on the way out of the room. He was probably going to talk to the manager about the broken furniture. Dean yanked on the belt loops of her pants and nodded his head towards the bathroom.
“Come on we should clean you up. I’ll wash your back.”
Jo grinned and nodded as she followed him towards the small bathroom. She chuckled as Dean turned on the shower before pulling off his shirt and tossing it across the bathroom floor. He lifted her up and fell back into the shower with her. She smiled as he wiped mud off her face and placed a soft kiss on her mouth as water poured down on their heads.
How did Jo know Dean loved her? It was in the small moments. One instant changed everything. She hadn’t been gone long, but it was long enough for him to realize what she meant to him and for that Jo was grateful. It was a good thing too, because she’d hate to think she was the only one in love.

i love how Dean realises he's in love with her at, like, the most inopportune time ever - when she's missing.
