Jo was startled out of her sleep by the soft sound of music floating through the open bedroom door. She glanced at Dean’s side of the bed frowning at the rumpled sheets. She sighed pushing the covers off her body before getting up in search of Dean.

As Jo got closer to the living room she could make out the song being played. She grinned as Dean sang along to Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven.’

“And it’s whispered that soon if we all call the tune, then the piper will lead us to reason, and a new day will dawn for those who stand long, and the forests will echo with laughter…”

His deep baritone voice sent shivers up her spine as she walked to the corner of the hallway peering into the sparsely lit room.

The sight before her made her heart melt. Dean stood in the middle of the room in a t-shirt and boxers, their four month old daughter against his chest as he swayed back and forth to the beat of the music completely at ease. The moments where he let his guard down were becoming more frequent.

Her mother used to worry that he wouldn’t know how to be a father that he’d eventually get overwhelmed, take off, but Jo knew better.

Dean talked a big game, but deep down he’d always wanted a family. He didn’t open up to many people, but once he did they were in his heart for life and Mary Elizabeth held a place inside Dean that no one would ever be able to touch.

He loved his little girl more than anything. He was an amazing father, better than Jo had expected. Neither one of them knew what the hell they were doing. They weren’t perfect, they made mistakes constantly, but they were both there…they were a family and that’s what mattered.

Jo cleared her throat and Dean’s head whipped around. When their eyes met he pressed a finger to his lips, voice soft.

“She just fell back asleep and she’s just as cranky as you when you’re woken up so tread lightly or you’re putting her back to bed when she wakes up screaming.”

She gave him a playful glare as she walked into the room.

“If that’s not the pot calling the kettle black…”

He smirked and looked back at their daughter as Jo wrapped her arms around him from behind trying to figure out how she’d gotten so lucky. Dean’s tender voice knocked her out of her thoughts as he sang the last verse of the song.

“And as we wind on down the road, our shadows taller than our soul, there walks a lady we all know. Who shines white light and wants to show…How everything still turns to gold, and if you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last. When all are one and one is all, yeah, to be a rock and not to roll, and she’s buying a stairway… to heaven…”

The instruments faded out and he let out a long breath content with everything around him at the moment. As he looked into his daughter’s peaceful face his heart warmed.

“In case I don’t say it enough, which I’m sure I don’t…I love you.”

Jo smiled against his back as she patted his stomach lightly.

“I love you too Deano. Why don’t you put the munchkin to bed in the nursery and I’ll show you just how much.”

She winked and he smirked as they moved toward the bedroom.

“I knew I kept you around for a reason.”
