Jo sucked in a long breath as her body catapulted forward, eyes wild, scanning the room before glancing down, hands flying to her stomach. She frowned and lifted her shirt. There wasn’t a scratch on her. It was as if her skin had never been marred by razor sharp claws, but she knew better.
She’d felt the hell hounds steal tipped nails tear at her insides. She remembered the cry from her mother and the cold numbness that had enveloped her body before she took her last breath. Jo Harvelle had died in Carthage Missouri, so how the hell was she alive now?
Jo slowly pushed herself off the white couch she’d been laying on, heartbeat pounding in her ears. She glanced around the room and spotted a long table full of what she now realized were her favorite foods.
Her brows furrowed as she took in the paintings on the walls. The room itself looked peaceful…good and yet the feeling it gave her was anything but. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end and she could feel someone’s gaze on her.
She whirled around and came face to face with a grinning dark haired man. He watched as she stiffened, body taking on a defensive posture and he held up his hands to styfen any fight she was about to put up.
“Hold up there Combat Barbie, let’s not do anything we’re gonna regret.”
“Who are you and where the hell am I?”
He smirked at the blonde hunter in front of him.
“Feisty aren’t we?”
She gave him a warning look and he rolled his eyes while letting out an exasperated sigh.
“Fine, kill my fun. The names Gabriel, I’m an Angel and you my foxy little she-hunter have been chosen.”
Jo crossed her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow, disbelief clear on her face.
“What is this? Buffy the Vampire Slayer? I’m chosen, what in the hell kinda line is that?”
He frowned.
“Hmm I suppose that was slightly cheesy, but it doesn’t make it any less true. You’re one of the Fallen sweetheart. It’s the end of days and you’re being offered a second chance.”
Jo studied him and he could see the suspicion on her face. Gabriel shifted his feet and leaned against the arm of the couch, hands slipping into his pockets.
“Why?”
“Why what?”
“Why me?”
“Because you sacrificed you life for someone else’s in hopes that he’d save the world. The big guy likes to reward good deeds and such. It keeps the faith alive.”
“What’s the catch?”
Gabriel shrugged.
“No catch you just have to keep on doing what you’ve been doing. Hunting things…saving people…a second chance at life is your reward.”
“Why should I believe you?”
Gabriel sighed. Untrusting humans, then again after everything she’d been through in her life could he really blame her?
“Believe me, don’t believe me it’s your choice, but this is a onetime offer. If you say yes, I’ll send you back, if you say no…well I assume at some point you’ll end up in heaven with the rest of your family.”
Jo swallowed hard. She wanted to see her father again…Ash, her mom, but if the Angel was telling the truth and he could give her back her life, think of all the people she could save. Jo met Gabriel’s eyes and took a deep breath.
“Okay.”
He raised a brow.
“Okay?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
There was a flapping sound and then he was standing directly in front of her hand out-streched touching her head smug grin on his face.
“Good choice.”
When his fingers made contact with her skin a jolt slammed into her body. Images, sounds, feelings all flowing through her as the wind was knocked from her lungs. And as Jo felt the room melt around her, warmth surging through every pore of her body…she knew in her heart she’d made the right choice.
