Chapter 6

Nebraska
The Roadhouse
(18-Weeks)

Jo watched her mother and Bobby whispering in the corner and she frowned. Those two were up to something. She sighed as Madison came over and leaned against the bar next to her, eyes drifting towards the adults. Madison pursed her lips together.

“Is he leaving? Didn’t he just get here?”

“Yeah, which means something’s up.”

“Something like what?”

Jo shrugged.

“Only one way to find out.”

She pushed away from the counter and moved towards her mom and Bobby right as they finished up their conversation. She folded her arms across her chest and raised an eyebrow.

“What’s going on?”

Bobby shrugged.

“Nothin.”

She glared at them while pointing her finger in an accusatory manner.

“You just got here. Why are you leaving?”

“Got called in on a job.”

Jo crossed her arms over her chest again and raised an eyebrow.

“The only call that came in since you been here today was from Sam so are you gonna tell me what’s going on or am I gonna have to call him back and find out myself?”

Bobby and Ellen glanced at each other before he sighed and turned toward Jo. He made a face, voice tempered as he spoke.

“Now listen here Joanna Beth, if I tell ya what’s goin on you gotta stay calm you hear?”

Of course the minute he said that her expression changed from annoyed to worried. Ellen sensed the shift immediately and went to reach out for Jo, but she moved back placing a hand on her stomach. She would not freak out, she would stay calm. Jo swallowed hard, voice soft as she spoke.

“What’s going on?”

“Sam figured out that their huntin’ a Djinn.”

Jo scrunched up her nose.

“A genie?”

Bobby nodded.

“Okay...that doesn’t exactly explain why they need you.”

He hesitated before letting out a short breath.

“Dean and Sam split up. He was searchin possible places the Djinn could be hidin’. Jo…he’s missing.”

Her mouth opened and closed, chest constricting. She needed to focus, form coherent thoughts, hell she was a hunter and if Dean was missing Sam was gonna need their help to find him.

“Missing? How long?”

“Does it really matter…”

“Damn it how long Bobby?”

“Bout nine hours maybe a little longer.”

The look on her face broke Bobby’s heart but as quickly as it came, it went. She squared her shoulders and he saw determination on her face.

“That’s longer than my comfort zone likes, but not long enough that it’s too late. Djinn’s like to keep their victims alive so they can feed on them for a while. How far out are they from where we are now?”

Ellen gave Bobby an incredulous look. Sometimes she had no idea how her daughter knew these things. You’d think with all the time she spent with Dean there wouldn’t be a lot of time for research.

“Five hours if I don’t hit traffic.”

Jo nodded.

“Let me grab my bag and we’ll head out.”

Three sets of eyes looked at her like she was crazy as she walked toward the back of the bar. Ellen called out to her.

“Joanna Beth, where do you think you’re goin?”

“To bring Dean home.”

Bobby shook his head.

“Oh no, I ain’t takin ya on the road. Huntin is no place for someone in your condition.”

She rolled her eyes.

“I’m pregnant not disabled. Listen you’re wasting time standing here arguing with me. I can’t sit here and do nothing. I can come help research and make sure you get Dean back.”

“Jo,”

“No! If it was me Dean would have already been out that door. Stop treating me like a child. I’ll be ready in five minutes.”

They watched her disappear as Bobby grunted.

“This isn’t a good idea.”

Ellen opened her mouth to agree when Madison cut in.

“It might not be a good idea, but I get where she’s coming from. Besides if you leave her here she’s only gonna take off on her own and that really isn’t safe.”

Ellen sighed. She knew Madison was right, but Jo was almost five months pregnant and Ellen wasn’t sure how helpful she could be. Jo’s voice broke the tension in the room.

“You ready?”

Bobby nodded as she walked toward them. He took her bag and headed out to the car. When she moved by her mother, Ellen reached out and stopped her.

“You be careful you hear? And bring that boy home.”

Jo gave her half a smile and tilted her head.

“No worries. We’ll be back soon.”

With that Jo was gone leaving Madison and Ellen in the quiet bar.

“Well I guess we should start getting things together for tonight now that we’re short a hand. Maddie sweetheart can you go see if Ash is awake? Tell him I need his help?”

Madison smiled.

“Sure thing Ellen.”

She turned towards the back and moved down the hallway to Ash’s door. It was open a crack and as she got closer she heard whispered voices. Madison frowned and took another step slowly. It almost sounded like he was speaking a different language.

She took another step and the floorboard creaked, voices stopping mid sentence. Her heart sped up as she closed the distance between her and the door knocking lightly. The last thing she wanted him to think was that she was spying.

Ash pulled the door open, face blank.

“Yo.”

She forced a smile on her face as she tried to calm her nerves that had suddenly went haywire. A chill traveled up her spine as his eyes met hers.

“Uh hey. Ellen asked me to come get you. Jo and Bobby left to go help Sam out so we’re shorthanded for tonight.”

Ash nodded.

“Sure thing sweet cheeks. Dr. Badass just has to change into some clean clothes.”

“Great. I’ll see you in a bit.”

She turned on her heels and headed back out to the front of the bar. She could feel his eyes following her and it did nothing to help her nerves. Maybe she was being paranoid maybe not, but something was definitely up.

Bobby had told her to trust her instincts and right now her instincts were telling her something wasn’t quite right with Ash. The question is would Ellen believe her if she mentioned her fears. Madison bit her lip. There was only one way to find out…
