Verse: ‘They used to be Happy’ snapshots into Sam and Jo’s life before the apocalypse and the downfall of their relationship.
Sam sat on top of the impala, metal warm against his skin, hand raised against the glare of the sun. Jo stood several feet away from him aiming his gun at a row of beer bottles. He watched her body shift as she took the stance he taught her and fired off a few rounds.
She hit three out of four bottles and let out an irritated growl noticing that the last bullet didn’t hit its target. She turned in his direction, blonde hair glistening in the late afternoon sun. He could clearly see the pout on her face as she motioned for him to join her in the grassy field.
Sam pushed himself off the impala and started in her direction as she moved toward the makeshift fence to add more empty beer bottles to it. It had been close to four weeks since their first date. Things had gone surprisingly well.
The only thing he regretted about the night was the lack of physical contact. He had been determined to not rush into things with her. He wanted this relationship to work; it wasn’t about sex for him. He sort of wished he’d kissed her when he had the chance though.
Jo was reloading the gun when she felt a large hand against her back. She turned half a smile on her face as she poked his chest.
“Alright Sammy show me again. I refuse to leave here until every bottle on that railing is in pieces.”
Sam laughed and Jo felt warmth fill her at his dimples and laugh lines crinkling around his eyes. He was beautiful. She couldn’t get enough of him. She’d missed him these past three and a half weeks he’d been hunting with Dean.
She listened vaguely as he explained how to hold the gun and when to shoot, but the truth was Jo was a pretty decent shot. When she was thirteen Rufus, a hunter and friend of her mother’s started teaching her, but Sam didn’t need to know that.
She could tell he enjoyed being the teacher for once instead of the student.
“You got it?”
Jo nodded a look of concentration on her face.
Sam watched her cock the gun, take stance, aim and fire five rounds. His eyes widened slightly as she bulls eyed all five. He was stunned. She whooped, turned around and propelled herself into his arms. Sam grinned arms closing around her small frame.
She pulled back, eyes meeting his as she licked her lips. A light breeze wafted through the air, tossing her hair around her face. Sam brushed a few strands behind her ears before cupping her cheeks. Everything stilled around them as he slowly lowered his head, Jo meeting him half way capturing his lips with wild abandon.
Their tongues battled for dominance as she moaned in his mouth, hands clasping his arms and side. Her lips were soft and he could taste the strawberry lip gloss that had made them shimmer in the sun. When they finally broke apart for air, Sam mated their foreheads together and she let out a content sigh. Sam chuckled.
“You already knew how to shoot, didn’t you?”
Jo glanced up at him through her lashes and shrugged.
“You like it.”
